This document will help you get a free and secure email client. The download is large but its worth while. The software you are going to download is Novell Groupwise 6.5 Multi Language. You can download this file through the support site of Novell.

note: Always read the Novell EULA that comes with the files you download, and comply to them.

System Requirements:

Please go to: http://support.novell.com and choose patches and fixes.

(note the website may be changed by the Novell webmaster, please try to find the file using search.)

This url might also work: http://support.novell.com/filefinder/

Download one of the files below:

 GW65CSP1M.ISO

 GW65SP1E_A.EXE

 August 13, 2003

 280 MB

Newer files should also work.

 For EXE file download:

Make sure you do not save the file to a directory with spaces in the names or longfile names, else extraction will fail.

Use for instance C:\TEMP

Open a CMD or COMMAND and extract the file by executing it.

For ISO file download:

Use WINRAR or CDMage to extract the files in the ISO, or just burn it to a CDR using Nero or any ISO compatible CD burning application. When extraction is complete you will get a directory structure containing a CLIENT directory. You only need this directory, all other directories are unusable at the moment.

Run CLIENT\WIN32\setup.exe and follow the online wizard. Check screenshots below for guidlines. This guide is written using a Windows 2000 Pro English version for installation.

Choose the language you prefer.

Windows Messaging System, if this message is displayed then Windows Messaging is not yet installed on your computer, please allow this to install. Depending on the operating system you are using you might have to reboot your system after which the Groupwise setup is automatically continued.

If asked let the computer restart.

Make sure you log in as the same user again.

If the setup does not continue automatically just run setup again.

The language question might return, answer it.

Just click NEXT.

ALWAYS choose Standard Install. If you choose workstation install the program will run from the CLIENT directory you are using to set it up, if that might be a CDROM it will run slow and you will always need the CD, so choose Standard Install and click NEXT.

Choose a destination folder, you might want to change it to Program Folder but default will work as well. Click NEXT to continue.

Enable all options and click NEXT.

Choose the folder in your startmenu. Click NEXT.

You should not enable this feature, Notify only works on Groupwise Postoffice and not for the POP3 Client.

Click NEXT.

Choose any language you want, multiple languages is also possible.

Click NEXT to continue.

I would always recommend to install your own language and the English language. If you get strange error codes you have more luck in the Novell Knowledge base using the English error message then any localized error message.

If you have choosen more then one language you are asked for the default language.

Click NEXT to continue.

Just click NEXT to start installation.

When done launch Groupwise.

Now comes the network part. The Groupwise client will try to find a Groupwise Postoffice. This will most likely not succeed and you will get a message like this:

Change the settings according to this picture, you can choose any path you like but I recommend using a local path. Also remember or write down this path for later usage. You cannot change the username, just enter the password of this user, it is the user which you are logged into the PC. (Might be different for Windows 9x versions).

You will get a message like this, just click YES to create the folder.

After you have clicked away the welcome screen you get this screen.

Click OK to continue.

You might get an add modem wizard or dialing properties wizard. Just enter the parameters as required.

After finishing the dialing properties wizard the Create Account wizard will popup.

Enter any account name and choose the Account type, this will be POP3 in most situations.

Enter all regular data of your POP3 email account.

Choose the type as you need, I will choose LAN.

Select the mailbox and click Finish.

Please choose Account and Send&Receive. You may need to enter a password of the POP3 server.

Using the account menu, and the Account options you can Add more POP3 email addresses. With customizing the toolbar you can add the Send/Receive button to the toolbar.

The final action for proper standalone usage is the startup parameter. Because of the build in need for a Groupwise postoffice, every time when you launch the Groupwise Client it will search for a Groupwise Postoffice but it will fail and you will have to select the remote location manually.

Please edit you startup shortcut for Groupwise according to this pictue.

As you can see I added the /ps-c:\novell\groupwise\remote  parameter to the grpwise.exe shortcut. Please enter the path you provided when you created the remote mailbox.

Well that's it. Have fun using Groupwise as your prive email client.
